The most common reason connections fail
If your Instagram account isn't connecting properly, or if Clue Labs isn't pulling your data correctly, the most likely cause is that the wrong option was selected during the Meta permissions flow.
When you connect your account, Facebook shows you a series of screens asking which Pages, Businesses, and Instagram accounts you want to give Clue Labs access to. Each screen has two options:
Opt in to all current and future [Pages / Businesses / Instagram accounts] ← select this
Opt in to current only
You must select "opt in to all current and future" on every screen. If you select "current only" on any screen, Clue Labs may not be able to access the data it needs to analyse your account — even if you only have one Instagram account connected.
This is the first thing to check if your connection isn't working.
What the connection flow looks like
Step 1 — Link Facebook Account
From Brand Connections, click Connect Account. A pop-up will open asking you to link your Facebook account. Make sure your browser allows pop-ups — if the window doesn't open, check your browser's pop-up blocker settings.
Step 2 — Choose your Pages
Facebook will ask which Pages you want Clue Labs to access.
Select Opt in to all current and future Pages. Do not select "current Pages only."
Step 3 — Choose your Businesses
Facebook will ask which Businesses you want Clue Labs to access.
Select Opt in to all current and future Businesses. Do not select "current Businesses only."
Step 4 — Choose your Instagram accounts
Facebook will ask which Instagram accounts you want Clue Labs to access.
Select Opt in to all current and future Instagram accounts. Do not select "current Instagram accounts only."
Step 5 — Review the access request
Facebook will show you a summary of everything Clue Labs is requesting access to. This screen should show all permissions opted in to all current and future accounts.
The permissions Clue Labs requests are:
Receive your email address — used to identify your account.
Manage your business — required to access your connected Business accounts.
Access profile and posts from the selected Instagram account — required to read your post history and content data.
Access insights for the Instagram account — required to read your performance data, reach, engagement, and other signals.
Read content posted on the Page — required to access your Facebook Page content linked to your Instagram.
Show a list of the Pages you manage — required to identify which Pages are connected to your Instagram account.
Every one of these permissions is required for Clue Labs to function. Clue Labs uses this access to read your data only — it never posts, modifies, or deletes anything on your behalf.
Step 6 — Connected
Once you've completed all the permission screens, Facebook will confirm the connection.
Close the pop-up and return to Clue Labs. Your account should now be connected and data sync will begin automatically.
Why "all current and future" is required
It might seem counterintuitive to grant access to future accounts you haven't created yet. Here's why it's necessary.
Instagram accounts are connected to Clue Labs via your Facebook Business account. The way Meta's API works, granting access only to "current" accounts creates a restricted token that can expire or become invalid when your account structure changes — even minor changes like updating your Facebook Page can break the connection.
Selecting "all current and future" creates a stable, persistent connection that continues to work reliably as your account evolves. Without it, you may find your connection drops unexpectedly and requires reconnecting.
It does not mean Clue Labs automatically has access to any new accounts you create in the future without your knowledge — you still control which brands are connected inside Clue Labs via Brand Connections.
A note for social media managers managing client accounts: granting "all current and future" access during this flow does not give Clue Labs access to your clients' accounts. It only grants access to the specific Instagram account and Facebook Page you are actively connecting in this session. Each client account requires its own separate connection flow, initiated deliberately from within Clue Labs. Clue Labs cannot and does not pull data from any account that hasn't been explicitly connected by you.
If a client is concerned about what Clue Labs can access, they can verify it themselves at any time by going to their Facebook Settings → Business Integrations. Every connected third-party app and its specific permissions are listed there, and access can be revoked directly from that page at any time.
If your connection still isn't working
Step 1 — Reconnect your account Go to Brand Connections and click Reconnect Account. Go through the full permissions flow again and make sure you select "opt in to all current and future" on every screen.
Step 2 — Check your Instagram account type Your Instagram must be a Business or Creator account. Personal accounts cannot be connected. Go to your Instagram settings and switch to a Professional account if needed, then reconnect.
Step 3 — Check your Facebook Page link Your Instagram account must be linked to a Facebook Page, and you must have admin access to that Page. If you're not the admin, you won't be able to grant the required permissions.
Step 4 — Check your browser pop-up settings The Meta connection flow opens in a pop-up window. If your browser is blocking pop-ups, the window won't open and the connection can't complete. Allow pop-ups for cluelabs.co.uk and try again.
Step 5 — Contact the team If you've worked through all of the above and still can't connect, reach out via the chat icon in the bottom right of the platform. The team can diagnose connection issues directly.
Common questions
Why does Clue Labs need to connect through Facebook to access Instagram? Instagram's API is part of the Meta platform, which means all Instagram connections go through Facebook's authorisation system. This is how Meta has structured third-party access to Instagram data — there's no way to connect Instagram without going through Facebook's permission flow.
Does Clue Labs post anything to my Instagram or Facebook? No. Clue Labs only reads your data. It never publishes, schedules, modifies, or deletes any content on your behalf.
Is my data secure? Yes. The connection is secured by Nango, a trusted OAuth infrastructure provider. Clue Labs only accesses the specific data types listed in the permissions review screen, and only uses that data to power your Clue Labs analysis.
I connected successfully but my data isn't appearing — what do I do? Data sync begins automatically after connection but can take a few minutes for accounts with a large post history. If nothing has appeared after 30 minutes, try disconnecting and reconnecting your account. If the issue persists, contact the team via the chat icon.
Can I revoke Clue Labs' access to my Facebook and Instagram? Yes. Go to your Facebook Settings → Business Integrations to remove Clue Labs' access at any time. You can also disconnect from within Clue Labs via Brand Connections → Disconnect Account.
